Nals Magreid
Founded in 1985 from the merger of the Nals (founded in 1932) and Magrè (founded in 1954) wineries, Nals Margreid is a cooperative winery that today comprises approximately 138 winemaking families. It manages approximately 160 hectares of vineyards spread across 14 different zones of Alto Adige, producing wines that range from Alpine freshness to Mediterranean structure. It is renowned for its contemporary architecture and the production of excellent white wines.
The company's roots date back to 1764, the year the Campi estate (current headquarters) was built, but its current form was consolidated with the 1985 merger. This union allowed for the sharing of very distant terroirs:
- Nals (Nals): Located in the north, in the Adige Valley, characterized by a cool Alpine climate and porphyry soils, ideal for fresh, minerally wines.
- Magrè (Margreid): Located in the south, in the Bassa Atesina, where the climate is warmer and more Mediterranean, perfect for varieties that require more advanced ripening.
Philosophy and Terroir
Nals Margreid's strength lies in the management of 14 distinct microclimatic zones, with altitudes ranging from 250 to 850 meters. Cellar master Harald Schraffl adopts a "precision" approach, vinifying grapes from different terroirs separately to enhance their mineral characteristics (limestone, moraine, or volcanic soils).
Architecture and Innovation
In 2011, the Nalles headquarters underwent a major expansion designed by architect Markus Scherer. The internationally award-winning structure integrates colored concrete (reminiscent of local porphyry) and oak, using gravity to delicately process the grapes.
